Bertolucci's notoriety peaked in 1972 with the controversial and “scandalous” “Ultimo Tango a Parigi” (Last Tango in Paris), starring Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider, and four years later with the epic film “Novecento” (1900) featuring an all-star cast: Robert De Niro, Gérard Depardieu, Burt Lancaster and Donald Sutherland.

In 1987, Bertolucci was able to repeat the enormous success with his second epic scope “L'Ultimo Imperatore” (The Last Emperor), winning nine Academy Awards...
