| description |
Digitmovies presents for the first absolute
time on CD complete and in full stereo the OST by Peppino De
Luca from the movie Il dio chiamato Dorian (aka Dorian Gray,
based on the novel The picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde,
directed in 1970 by Massimo Dallamano and starring Helmut Berger,
Herbert Lom, Richard Todd, Marie Liljedahl, Margaret Lee, Maria
Rohm, Beryl Cunningham, Isa Miranda, Eleonora Rossi Drago.
The myth of Dorian Gray is placed in the late sixties London.
Dorian Gray is a very beautiful fashion model who meets the
aspirant actress Sybil Vane and they fall in love for each other.
Meanwhile, his friend Basil concludes his realistic painting
with his face and Dorian, fascinated with the picture, proposes
the devil to exchange his soul for eternal youth and beauty.
From the moment of his satanic path, Dorian becomes a corrupt
and amoral man, sex and other vices driven and capable of destroying
many lives including Sibyl's.
Time is passing, his friends grow older, but Dorian remains
young and beautiful, but his painting now discloses all his
innermost ugliness, fruit of the evil done in the latest years...
The music score is signed by the noted Italian composer Peppino
De Luca, a musician sadly passed away prematurely years ago,
who has given a lot in the field of the Beat, Jazz and Bossa
music, collaborating also with Carlo Pes and I Marc 4.
For Cinema he has written some scores like La ragazza con la
pistola (1968), Il debito coniugale (1970), L'uomo dagli occhi
di ghiaccio (1971).
C.A.M. issued on a promotional library album ten tracks from
the OST, a today very rare vinyl and thanks to the recording
session stereo master tapes kept until today in the C.A.M. historic
archives, we can release a very fascinating and unique score
regarding its sonorities.
Peppino De Luca has written a romantic and a little haunted
main theme for the character of Dorian introduced in Tr. 1,
then reprised in Tr. 8, Tr. 10 (with strings orchestra and the
voices of Edda and I Cantori Moderni), in Tr. 13, in Tr. 26
(with Edda).
All the background music of the Swinging London is given by
a lot of Beat music (Tr. 6, Tr. 7, Tr. 12, Tr. 14, Tr. 19, Tr.
21, Tr. 24, Tr. 28), Bossa music with choir (Tr. 4, Tr. 13).
The romantic side of the story is present in Tr. 3, Tr. 26,
but the author has written also experimental music (Tr. 2, Tr.
16, Tr. 27, Tr. 29),cocktail party music with Henry Mancini's
vein (Tr. 9, Tr. 15) and renaissance music with pop arrangement
between Vivaldi and The Beatles (Tr. 5).
Another Italian Silver Age treasury rescued. |

| story |
The classic story of evil by Oscar Wilde
is a plodding, campy, trashy production that gives the viewer
moments of unintentional laughter.
Dorian Gray (Helmut Berger) is the vain young Englishman who
sells his soul to the devil to remain eternally youthful in
appearance.
His portrait is being painted by Basil (Richard Todd), much
to the delight of his first true love Sybil (Marie Liljedahl).
Lord Henry Wolton (Herbert Lom )is Dorian's partner in collaborating
with evil.
Gray remains the same but the picture reflects his image to
show the ravages of old age and time.
The drama, mystery and psychology of the original book is
absent from this poorly made remake done 25 years earlier.
Herbert Lom goves the only noteworthy performance of the film.
