| description |
Directed in 1975 by Mauro Bolognini, starring
the late Marcello Mastroianni, Francoise Fabian and Marthe Keller
and set in the Thirties, Per le antiche scale tells about a
psychiatrist obsessed by the idea that insanity is the result
of a pathogenic agent, a bacterium that can be isolated.
Professionally as well as sentimentally frustrated, the psychiatrist,
after having got acquainted with the racist ideology of the
uprising Fascism, realizes that insanity starts growing on a
very large scale.
The film benefits from a beautifully crafted melodic score by
Ennio Morricone, and has been recorded here in its completeness
for the first time. |

| story |
In this drama, set during the 1930s, the
head shrink at an Italian insane asylum believes that insanity
is caused by a virus.
His intensive research has caused him to spend all his time
at the hospital.
He hasn't left it for eight years.
A young female doctor comes and gets close to the chief doctor.
She learns that he is afraid he has become infected.
The only bright spots in his life are the affairs he has with
the superintendent's wife, his assistant, and the wife of
a peer.
